I grew up with my grandmother in a small village in Cameroon, where access to clean drinking water was one of the biggest challenges we faced every day. After school, I would walk to a nearby stream to fetch water for my family. Sometimes, people farther upstream would be washing clothes, and we had no way of knowing whether the water was clean. Yet it was the water we relied on for drinking, cooking, and daily life.
Once the pot was full, I would carefully balance it on my head and begin the long walk home, often under the hot African sun. Every step required balance and determination. There were days when I stumbled just before reaching home, spilling the water I had worked so hard to collect. When that happened, there was no choice but to turn around and walk back to the stream to start all over again.
That wasn't just my childhood—it was the reality for many families in my village and for millions of people across Africa.
Today, I am grateful to live in the United States, where clean drinking water is something many people can access with the turn of a faucet or by visiting a water fountain. One day at work, as I filled my water bottle, I paused and thought about my childhood. It reminded me that while clean water is easily available to many of us, millions of families around the world still struggle to access this basic necessity.
That realization inspired me to take action.
During one of my trips to Africa, I purchased secondhand shoes with my own money and combined them with additional shoes donated by a local church. I took those shoes to children in Luanda, Angola. Watching their faces light up with excitement and gratitude was an unforgettable experience. Their smiles touched my heart and reminded me that even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
That experience strengthened my commitment to serving others.Building a Business with Purpose
